David Papadopolous
David Papadopolous
David Papadopoulos manages a distinctive mix of activities that relate people, landscape and technology, based on his formal training in the social sciences, landscape architecture, and computer science. He combines an educator’s interest in people and skills development with an engineer's concern for process and focus on getting things done. David also maintains an active interest in the art of repurposing materials and technology for personal and community benefit.
A tutor in human geography at the Open University, his field of research is spatiality of dereliction, and he is a tireless community activist in the planning of public space and schemes for public art.
David has been a key associate to Cornerstone directors’ activities for 11 years, collaborating with Susan Williamson on characteristically eclectic projects, starting with their award-winning work in the World Heritage Site of Gallipoli and recently including 3 years work on Durham’s Necklace Park where he has been a community engagement lynchpin. David and Susan’s collaboration is informed by a North American enthusiasm for colourful, larger-than-life characters and situations, and by a shared instinct for a project's strengths.
For the last year he has also been mapping coordinator for Cornerstone’s Dott 07 project ‘Mapping the Necklace’ www.dott07.com, www.mapping-the-necklace.org.uk , encouraging mappers of both physical and virtual space to ‘visit’ and map Durham’s ephemeral park from all over the world.
Other recent work includes the Sozo Collective’s Festival of Extreme Building in Birmingham, and he acts as Secretary of Birmingham Open Spaces Forum (campaigning for parks and public open spaces in Birmingham), and as Co-Chair and website editor for Birmingham’s Highbury Park Friends.
